Bangalore North University (BNU)

Bangalore North University

Bangalore or Bengaluru North University (BNU) is a state university located near NH 75 at Tamaka in Kolar, Karnataka, India. The Karnataka government established the university in 2017 as a result of the 2015 Karnataka State Universities (Amendment) Act, which divided Bangalore University into Bengaluru North University and Bengaluru Central University. T.D. Kemparaju, a former Mangalore institution registrar, was named vice-chancellor and the institution was officially established on September 21, 2017.

In a 2009 investigation, a commission advocated dividing up Bangalore University, which has over 600 associated colleges. C. T. Ravi, Karnataka’s minister for higher education, announced plans in 2012 to separate 300 institutions from the university by establishing Bengaluru North University. There have been requests to adopt or even establish the four institutions.

In May 2015, the government announced that, in accordance with the initial recommendation, it will build Bengaluru North University and Bengaluru Central University, each with 200 colleges. The law was passed in July of 2015, and the university officially opened on September 21, 2017. However, as of October 18, 2017, no funds had been sent to the university by the government.

The university is affiliated with 210 colleges. The Karnataka Legislative Assembly constituencies are utilized to determine affiliation with the three universities. BNU is associated with all colleges in the following districts: Srinivaspur, Mulbagal, KGF, Bangarpet, Kolar, and Malur Assembly constituencies in Kolar district; KR Puram, Pulikeshinagar, Sarvagnanagar, CV Raman Nagar, and Mahadevapura Assembly constituencies in Bengaluru Urban district; Gauribidanur, Bagepalli, Chikkaballapur Assembly constituencies in Chikkaballapur district; Gauribidanur, Bagepalli, Sidlaghatta, and Chintamani.

About Bangalore University (BU)

Bangalore University, appropriately known as the “I.T. Capital of India,” was founded in July 1964 as an offshoot of the University of Mysore, primarily to include institutions of higher learning located in the metropolitan city of Bangalore and the districts of Bangalore, Kolar, and Tumkur, and later became a separate University. Initially, the nucleus of Bangalore University was built by the city’s two top colleges, Central College (CC) and University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE).

In 1965-66, shortly after the establishment of Bangalore University, the University launched Honours curricula as a first step in the reorganization of curricula. Many talented students have enrolled in three-year Honours courses in Botany, Chemistry, Economics, English, Geology, Kannada, Mathematics, and Zoology, which are exclusively available at university postgraduate departments. Honours passed students were granted priority entry to Post Graduate Courses, while B.A./B.Sc. graduates who narrowly missed admission to Post Graduate Courses were offered the opportunity to join the final year Honours course and then seek admission to Post Graduate Courses. Since 1964, Bangalore University has increased in size and strength, with a significant number of affiliated institutions and P.G. Centres offering a wide range of programme options. In accordance with this expansion, the University relocated many of its postgraduate departments to a new campus known as ‘Jnana Bharathi’ (JB) on a spacious 1100 acre plot of land in 1973. The Vice Chancellor’s office, Registrar, Registrar (Evaluation), Finance Officer, and a large number of postgraduate departments, Directorates, Centres of higher learning, NSS Bhavan, Outdoor Stadium, and other support services are currently housed on the JB Campus. The JB Campus is home to the University Law College, which was founded in 1948, and the College of Physical Education, which was founded in 1959.

Gandhi Bhavan, the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Study and Research Centre, and the Centre for Research on Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy have all been founded by the University. Bangalore University has celebrated 52 years of flourishing existence and has grown to become one of Asia’s major universities. Though it was originally intended to be a federal university, it has since evolved into an affiliating university. The University was first accredited by NAAC in 2002 with Five Star Status, and was re-accredited in 2008 and November 2016 in the second and third cycles with a ‘A’ grade.

According to the QS University Ranking: BRICS-2016, Bangalore University is rated 151st among the BRICS nations. According to the Hansa Research Survey 2016, which was published in THE WEEK on May 29, 2016, Bangalore University is placed No. 15 in the Top Multi-disciplinary Universities at the All India level, No. 9 in the Top State Multi-disciplinary Universities, No. 5 in the South Zone, and No. 1 in the State of Karnataka.

The University is divided into six faculties: arts, science, commerce and management, education, law, and engineering. It is responsible for 48 Postgraduate Departments, one Postgraduate Centre at Kolar (established in 1994-95), four University colleges, 684 associated colleges, and various other Centres and Directorates of higher learning and research. The University currently provides 50 Post Graduate Courses as well as Employment Oriented Diploma and Certificate Courses. The Five-Year Integrated Courses in Biological Sciences have been launched by the University.

The University also reaches out to the community by hosting endowment and extension lectures, as well as publishing books on current themes through its Prasaranga division.

Bangalore University has made significant strides by signing Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with universities and institutions of national and international renown. The University strives to provide access, expansion, and excellence in higher education to a student population of nearly three lakhs. The University’s vision is to make unique and substantial contributions to the cause of higher education in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Law, Commerce, Science, and Technology. The University provides outstanding education and encourages research in frontier areas with social importance, which reflects its vision and aspirations, which are aptly symbolized by its emblem ‘JNANAM VIGNANA SAHITHAM’.
