Bangalore University, appropriately known as the “I.T. Capital of India,” was founded in July 1964 as an offshoot of the University of Mysore, primarily to include institutions of higher learning located in the metropolitan city of Bangalore and the districts of Bangalore, Kolar, and Tumkur, and later became a separate University. Initially, the nucleus of Bangalore University was built by the city’s two top colleges, Central College (CC) and University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE).
In 1965-66, shortly after the establishment of Bangalore University, the University launched Honours curricula as a first step in the reorganization of curricula. Many talented students have enrolled in three-year Honours courses in Botany, Chemistry, Economics, English, Geology, Kannada, Mathematics, and Zoology, which are exclusively available at university postgraduate departments. Honours passed students were granted priority entry to Post Graduate Courses, while B.A./B.Sc. graduates who narrowly missed admission to Post Graduate Courses were offered the opportunity to join the final year Honours course and then seek admission to Post Graduate Courses. Since 1964, Bangalore University has increased in size and strength, with a significant number of affiliated institutions and P.G. Centres offering a wide range of programme options. In accordance with this expansion, the University relocated many of its postgraduate departments to a new campus known as ‘Jnana Bharathi’ (JB) on a spacious 1100 acre plot of land in 1973. The Vice Chancellor’s office, Registrar, Registrar (Evaluation), Finance Officer, and a large number of postgraduate departments, Directorates, Centres of higher learning, NSS Bhavan, Outdoor Stadium, and other support services are currently housed on the JB Campus. The JB Campus is home to the University Law College, which was founded in 1948, and the College of Physical Education, which was founded in 1959.
Gandhi Bhavan, the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Study and Research Centre, and the Centre for Research on Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy have all been founded by the University. Bangalore University has celebrated 52 years of flourishing existence and has grown to become one of Asia’s major universities. Though it was originally intended to be a federal university, it has since evolved into an affiliating university. The University was first accredited by NAAC in 2002 with Five Star Status, and was re-accredited in 2008 and November 2016 in the second and third cycles with a ‘A’ grade.
According to the QS University Ranking: BRICS-2016, Bangalore University is rated 151st among the BRICS nations. According to the Hansa Research Survey 2016, which was published in THE WEEK on May 29, 2016, Bangalore University is placed No. 15 in the Top Multi-disciplinary Universities at the All India level, No. 9 in the Top State Multi-disciplinary Universities, No. 5 in the South Zone, and No. 1 in the State of Karnataka.
The University is divided into six faculties: arts, science, commerce and management, education, law, and engineering. It is responsible for 48 Postgraduate Departments, one Postgraduate Centre at Kolar (established in 1994-95), four University colleges, 684 associated colleges, and various other Centres and Directorates of higher learning and research.
